Work Health & Safety Management Systems (Systems Adherence)

 

Under the primary duty of care, the PCBU, officers and workers must, so far as reasonably practicable ensure:

  • The provision and maintenance of a workplace or site that does not present a risk to worker health and safety.
  • Provide and maintain all plant and equipment, structures and systems of work, to ensure the health and safety of workers, this includes but not limited to, mobile plant (i.e. forklifts), machinery guarding, the pace and frequency of work tasks.
  • The correct use, handling, storage and transport of all plant, equipment, structures and substances (i.e. chemicals, dust, fibres and other dangerous goods).
  • The provision of adequate facilities (i.e. bathrooms/washrooms, lockers and/or meal areas) to ensure the continued welfare for the workers.
  • Adequate training, information, supervision and instruction are provided to workers and others around them, to protect their health, safety and wellbeing.
  • The workplace conditions and health of workers is monitored to prevent any adverse affects from the work activities being suffered by workers or others around them.
  • Consultation and cooperation occurs between the PCBU, Officers and Workers, to address or resolve any Health and Safety related matter that has the potential to negatively affect the health and safety of workers or others at the workplace.
  • Officers of the PCBU must exercise due diligence to ensure the PCBU complies with its Health and Safety duties and responsibilities.
  • Workers have a duty to follow all reasonable instruction designed to protect the health and safety of workers.

 

Visitors to the workplace or site, also hold duty of care responsibilities, to ensure the health and safety of themself and others at the workplace or site in which they are visiting.

 

Failure to meet the provisions under the duty of care component of the OHS/WHS act, has the potential to increase the injury and/or incident rate at the workplace, increase costs and expose the business or undertaking to substantial financial penalties.
